How can we see so far into the universes history using telescopes?

The universe is very, very big. 13 billion years is a very long time; the distance light has covered is 7.64204976 10^22 miles. But with huge and precise telescopes, we can catch tiny specks of light from galaxies as far away as that. Galaxies are tiny compared to the universe, so the sky is hard to fill! If you have a good enough telescope, you can spot them, and if a big event happened there then the extra light will stand out.
