Toddlers allowed up and down stairs alone yes or no?

hi im just after peoples advice and experience's i have a 2 half year old and we still have stair gates on top and bottom we don't let her go up and down by herself shes so clumsy and i would be worried about her falling,i do know other kids same age ish who are allowed to freely go up and down stairs.im just interested to know what u all think about it and what u did with ur Little 1s when it came to this subject thanx xxxxx
